File Sharing, Viruses
and Blocked Network Protocols
The only way to reliably secure a computer
from network dangers such as hacking and viruses is to disconnect it from
the network. Since it is not possible to do this and provide network services,
CPS has taken steps to mitigate network threats both physical, virtual
and legal. Among these steps is the blocking/restricting of ceratin network
services and protocols. Following is a list of explicitly denied/restricted
network services and protocols. This list is by no means exhaustive and
is subject to change. If you have questions about what these terms mean
or the policies set forth, please contact Paul Wright in Information Technology
Services.
CPS does not support peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing.
P2P file sharing opens up CPS and CPS network users to possible legal
action by computer file copyright owners and increases the likelihood
of computer virus contamination.
Where possible P2P protocols are blocked both into and out of the CPS
network. Blocked P2P services include (but are not limited to) AudioGnome,
OpenNap, AudioGalexy, BitTorrent, EDonkey, KaZaA, Napster, DirectConnect,
Gnutella, PeerEnabler, Winny and Blubster.
CPS does not support Windows NetBios outside of the
CPS network.
NetBIOS ports-which are required for certain Windows network functions
such as file sharing--
provide doorways to vulnerabilities which are widely used to break into
systems and exploit them in various ways.
NetBios protocols are blocked both into and out of the CPS network.
CPS does not support ICMP (ping) outside of the CPS
network.
Ping, a commonly used network diagnostic tool is also used by certain
viruses to contact and infect other computers.
ICMP (ping) is blocked both into and out of the CPS network.
CPS does not support mail servers other than the official
CPS GroupWise mail server.
Recent viruses try to exploit vulnerabilities in desktop operating systems
and propagate themselves via mail protocols.
SMTP, POP3 and IMAP protocols are blocked both into and out of the CPS
network.
CPS offers limited bandwidth for streaming media.
Streaming media such as RealAudio or Windows Media Player use large amounts
of Internet resources and have been found deteriorate network performance
for other legitimate educational resources.
If your school/location has an educational use for streaming media please
contact Paul Wright to have restrictions adjusted to allow specific streaming
connections.
CPS does not support online multiplayer gaming.
Where possible online multiplayer gaming protocols are blocked both into
and out of the CPS network.
